As our threshold for tolerating absurd antics by elected leaders lurches forward, our civilization framework clanks, clink by contemptible clink.

Our Delusional Frame: unconscious oblivion
Exclusion Phase: Although the American experiment is a grand, myriad synthesis, its cultural DNA is an unmistakable product of Platonic Idealism and Cartesian Dualism. Ultimately, we’re a society of radical individuals chasing absolute, shining ideals through Descartes’ reasoning-rationale mind, which included Plato’s non-Earthly heaven.
So, the matter|body vs psyche|mind formal split they bequeathed us, simply because the unconscious mind was too messy-complex to observe-measure-situate-satisfy within their philosophic canon, has left us completely unequipped for accepting-embodying our holistic selves as the, also, irrational, emotional, story craving beings we actually are...much of which our unconscious mind catalyzes.
Therefore, literally, everything we create or engage in features this profound incapacity...blind spot. And, we’re completely unaware this psychologically-based determinant of our destiny is missing. Such that, our inadequate world works guide, authored by ambitious, left-brain dominant males 2,400 to 400 years ago, continues to seed our obsessional preoccupation with:
individual autonomy
self-determination
a mechanistic perception of Nature, and
our vast internal emptiness.
Exploitation Phase: Skipping on to the first half of the 20th C, all that lop-sided collective-vulnerability, left by Plato-Decartes, was then ingeniously exploited by Edward Bernays’ deep grasp of his Uncle Sigmund Freud’s disruptive unconscious mind revelations. Whether serving as a government propaganda consultant or a corporate America marketing sleuth, Bernays ‘engineered the consent of the masses’ from 1920-50 on just about everything, authoring Propaganda, in 1928, a foundational text arguing that the invisible manipulation of the masses is a required mechanism for sustaining an organized democratic society.

Effectively, we Americans have existed in a KGB-esque psyops operation for over 100 years, in complete oblivion of it, because our metaphysical foundation of existence perceives the unconscious as an element to bizarre to comprehend. What culture cannot name, it struggles to perceive. And what it cannot perceive, it cannot protect. A microcosm instance of what’s going on at scale. In fact, if you understand the sea change of what CA did…1) the undisputably established fact that politics is way downstream of culture, and 2) politics is on its last legs…psyops by the very rich will rule us all quite easily, and it’s already in its intermediate stage of doing so.

And, we Fight Back with Our Conscious Rationalism Tool Kit. It’s true we’re no longer drinking out of lead-soldered cans or selecting one brand of smokes over another because they’re better for us. We’re onto the marketing inequities consciously exacted upon us without guilty conscience...under the ‘do whatever we can get away with’ clause that fits so well within our: more thriving capitalism, less limiting ethics epistemology (also conceived within the delusional exploitative frame by 20th C robber barons). We use our raw-reasoning-scientific-inquiry-primed-minds to probe-learn. We leverage our self-determination to rid these threats (except for the mindset), precisely because our approved rationalism is built to resolve this kind of right fit problem.
But sadly, we have no Unconscious Irrationalism Tools. Our recent political problems, we’re literally imploding from, cannot be fixed with our one-type-of-fix-only kit. The exploitation-persisting, will-wielding, integrity-shorting perpetrations of our current governors can never be remedied by just conscious logos (logic). Because all that profoundly impactful stuff springs mostly from the unconscious ethos inner-workings staked in the deep murky realm that our current metaphysics doesn’t even acknowledge the existence of, much less name. If it’s: frequency of taxpayer funded golf games, number of passed bills, voting record, salary, rally turn out, or approval rating, we’re covered. But if it’s an issue of character-scruples-psychopathy...we have no formalized tests, terminology, classification, or sanctioned eval process to assess-reject-protect ourselves.
The result? Exposure by scandal...one we didn’t see coming (because our society allows the invisible unconscious to remain that way!). And then it all script-flips into the heaven realm where messy morality is confined-judged, invoking the pastor, trial by peers, verdict, crucifixion, exile, rebirth, re-entry...a cycle sure to be repeated by the same offender whether we witness or not. Superficial hoodwink complete. Platonic-Cartesian schism intact. Ready for reload. Civilization scaffolding rattling.

Proposed Correction Frame: unconscious reckoning
Better ways are available!
If there’s any one point to make here it’s that our cognition shortcuts, mental boundaries, ‘world works guide’ is way too...biased-limited...for extricating ourselves from this mess. We’re now living in a world that has proven Newtonian physics and Darwin’s ‘survival of the fittest’ are but 50% of our reality story, at best, forget the emerging evidence that plants possess an astonishing level of intelligence; yet, cognitively, we’re not much beyond the late 1800s.
If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over-over, but expecting different results, then to dare duel with our wicked problems we must consider and utilize an abundance of reference frames, to fill our void like: quantum social theory, anthroposophy, taoism, futures thinking, gestalt psychology, linguistics, hermetics, memetics, hermeneutics, more.

One frame, most deserving of immediate adoption, is Carl Jung’s Analytical Psychology. Unlike Sigmund Freud’s strictly materialistic and biological view of the mind, Jung viewed the human psyche as inherently meaning-seeking, purposeful, and deeply connected to a ‘primordial ocean of shared human history filled with metaphors and images.’ Exactly the content we’ve inherently gravitated to...are awash in today...especially within the context of social-streaming media we cannot get enough of.
Specifically, it supports the kind of framing so much more reflective of the story devouring humans we really are...a format we actually require to understand-express-perceive ourselves in relation to others and the wide world:

The Actual Culprit: Shadow Projection
In Carl Jung’s psychology, Shadow Projection is a psychological defense mechanism. A built in default where you consciously blame your own hidden, disowned, or unacceptable traits onto some thing, person or group.
Your Shadow consists of the parts you reject due to shame, fear, or social conditioning...because looking at these traits directly is way too uncomfortable.
Politicians (Trump, Sánchez, LePen, Farage, Putin, Bolsonaro, more) are not only disowning their shadow...they're relocating it onto the system as the deep state or witch hunt. The Martyr/Persecuted-Hero reframes their indictment as crucifixion, converting liability into loyalty fuel. If they can't integrate it? they externalize onto an enemy. A cheap trick we must wake up to and call out for what it is...hoodwinking.
Followers/Voters cooperate because their own in-group shadow is also unbearable to face. Easier for them to believe persecution than corruption...preserving station.
All to note, projecting is the easy-feel good way, immediately gratifying, giving rise to a misperception of strength. While integrating is much, much harder, exasperating, vulnerability inducing, and provokes the opposite misperception of weakness, but does in fact afford full optimization of who we actually are...and assures a much sturdier scaffolding for our ever on-going evolution. Even setting us on course for Intentional Evolution, not just the willy-nilly, run amuck kind we’re busy with now.

Under the Waterline: Why Voters Flounder
Projecting our Shadows is an unconscious phenomenon transpiring since we lifted knuckles off the ground, but in the 21st Century seems particularly rampant, visible, and globally networked.
Zoom out far enough and we realize the pattern predates modernity by centuries.
Rome’s Imperialist Caesar engaged in classic shadow projection through his intense focus on the Senate's lust for absolute power. The aggressive, unyielding, and autocratic impulses he despised...fought against in his enemies...were the exact traits he refused to consciously acknowledge in himself as he systematically dismantled the Republic to become Dictator for Life.
The Enlightenment didn't just give us science...its creators subconsciously shadowed the Western study of it with: Conquer Nature! and prescribed that only reason, rationalization, measurable, and controllable as worthy. Everything else...intuition, instinct, imagination, the illogical parts of human beingness...got eliminated for being too messy to incorporate into clean theories, aka Shadow Projection at civilizational scale. Live dog vivisection in the name of pure reason wasn't an aberration of the Enlightenment...it was their logic working exactly as ‘they’ perceived, devised, and mostly willed it to be. And it’s this narrow gaze of will that we're still victims of 400 to 500 years later.
Zoom back in, and the current Global Right-Wing surge stands on the shoulders of The Enlightenment, but leverages their own arsenal of abstractions, tailored to just them. This time the ontological psychic structure comes from the realm of: Archetype and Symbol, as in The Martyr, The Strongman, The Persecuted Righteous. These universally recognized icons, embedded so deeply in all of our collective conscious via ancient stories, do the heavy perception shaping. While, contemporary derivations like Dungeons and Dragons or Game of Thrones keep them refreshed-alive today. This psychic meaning-forged theatre is why fact-checks don't matter...you can't out-argue an archetype/symbol using logic. More proof of the validity of the Jungian frame. Ntm, the news cycle adores these shorthand triggers to incite reciprocal passion...subscriptions/sales.
So our current leaders are, literally, operating out of their unaccountability, aka their shadow projecting of unconscious fears-desires, all day long, which in turn invites their followers to do the same. Participation Mystique is where member and tribe identity fuse so completely that the wrongdoing is not registered. It's not that people are choosing to excuse it. It's that they're not experiencing it as separate from themselves.
The picture isn't polarization creating two sides that disagree. It's the embodied activation of these ancient preexisting Archetypal Shadows that innately flex now. Nobody is positioned to see any of it clearly, because seeing it 1) requires acknowledging the legitimate existence of the Unconscious Mind and 2) precludes twisting the lens of scrutiny upon themselves.

The Present Baseline
The part that matters most is that none of this is coming. It's here.
Entropic Drift is our setting, running for a while now. There’s no single collapse, just relentless mini-dramas perpetrated by the villains that slow bleeds the legitimacy of everything. Institutions keep functioning on paper while carrying less and less real authority. Tribes can't even agree internally anymore on what winning would look like, which means governance becomes purely performative.
Charismatic Consolidation is thriving in more than one country and the opposition doesn't just lose arguments, it gets branded illegitimate, or is formally delegitimized. Dangerous. A single Martyr-Hero figure accumulates enough power to stop needing the other side's consent at all, so institutions get bypassed rather than contested. Just more mechanism piling on.
This is the floor we're already standing on and only by naming it, admitting it, absorbing it, can we start to treat/counteract it. At least these two baseline components are the essence of our current problem, not future possibilities.
Would seem only an epic-level exogenous shock could shift things: pandemic, war, economic or climate collapse, alien invasion. Something so large neither side could shadow-project it onto the other. But even with that, forced unity isn't authentic unity. Imposed from outside, under duress, would make it fragile. Most likely, the old split just resumes the moment the acute threat lifts. So even the hopeful scenario just pauses our disease. And if the Epstein Files didn’t do it, it’s looking like aliens are only hope.

The Root Cause (~150 words)
The ultimate point is to recognize the root cause of our untenable problem is not polarization, mere symptom, but our low-level-consciousness.
Unaccountable actors are actively damaging real people and the natural world, perpetually; shadow-projection-from-lack-of-internal-accountability is the disease.
The underlying refusal to confront our complicated, contradictory, individual selves is the real problem, at scale.
So, we’re in constant backlash-whiplash mode to avoid this excrustiaing self-reckoning, vacillating between extreme polarities whether they come in the form of too aesthetic or wildly running up the debt, sending to much aid to the impoverished vs not near enough, or being misled under the notion that we’re only our conscious aspirational will-ego and completely denying or externalizing our unconscious shadow parts onto anything or one we can. Our Humanity is exhibiting a tween-age behavioral pattern, at best.
The Only Real Fix: Individuation(~200 words)

Individuation = the self reflective, internal work of owning what we disown, instead of dumping it on an external enemy, which in effect makes us feel so much better in the long and predisposed
Explicitly counter the new-age read: this isn't self-help, it's the only route that actually breaks projection, because projection is definitionally what happens when internal accountability is skipped.
Naming the pattern (shadow projection, DARVO, gaslighting) publicly is itself an act of individuation at civilizational scale — language as the first lever.

Yes, streaming and politics fills that primordial ache for the off-grid mystical. In the case of the latter: gathering in larger groups, sharing about things bigger than ourselves, singing the same song which, now, looks like meme-splattered posters and chanted hashtags. Participation Mystique, as appropriated by Jung: individual + group identity fusing...the group's fate is their fate... ‘My side's’ scandal doesn't register...it's not experienced as separate from self.
This is regression, not politics. Jung: when individuation fails, people fall back into collective identity for psychic safety. Bullying with assurance of your posse.
Our Polarization is a symptom of mass anxiety driven Regression, not a standalone cause.
Individual vs Society Tension
Old model: individual conscience → public shame → social CORRECTION. Watergate. Requires individuated citizens capable of moral judgment independent of tribe.
Current model: tribe conscience → tribe shame denial → social CORRUPTION. January 6. Society segments have absorbed individual conscience. You feel shame only for what threatens the group, not for what violates your individual moral standard. Collapse of our Transcendent Function, the psyche's capacity to Hold Opposing Truths without splitting...means refusing to admit wrong doing, instead of ‘my side messed up’ AND ‘I/we will own that, do better next time’.
Identity Framing
Political Identity has become a persona so total it's swallowed the Self. (partially due to religious affiliation void).
When Identity = Party, an attack on the politician IS an attack on the self.
No psychic distance = No critical judgment.
This is inflation, ego fused with group archetype...dangerous because inflated systems don't self-correct...they escalate.

Where we've been: Shared Truth → Scandal Matters (Watergate) → Individuated Conscience + Shared Media Reality
Where we are: Post Truth → Scandal is Biased Interpretation → Splitting + Tribal Participation Mystique. Scandal simply forces people to project their own hidden/inextricable unconscious onto the mess.
What it points to: New Truth or Demise. Either Civilization Resets or Civilization-Level Regression implodes.
Historically, all the above precedes Authoritarian Consolidation.
Not because people want tyranny...but because they want relief from unbearable ambiguity.
Even false certainty beats the anxiety of holding complexity.
Where We are Now, and likely to Remain...Awhile
‘We don’t trust those people’...’We’ll never change.’
And, in the U.S., that preset has been unaddressed, yet percolating since, at least, the early 1990s when the internet created a modernity sea change, that humanity has yet to fully sort through-cope with. We haven’t even scratched the surface of how worldwide web connectivity and exposure to all global content all the time has transformed our brain and emotional quotient...and here comes AI posing mass extinction...but worth the risk.
While on the other innate human condition side, the U.S. has never absorbed-assimilated deep, psyche-searing, tragedies like: slavery, the Great Depression, WWI-II, JFK-RFK-MLK assassinations, Vietnam War, 9-11, January 6, others. Our population remains in a vacuum about all of these brain-heart scrambling, seismic existence shifts...suppress, move along, invest more...Kalshitification!
Not a shamelessness crisis, a psychic containment failure. Society has lost its capacity to hold tension...between 'my group' vs 'the truth.
Pinned: Energy Imbalance
Ultimately, this profound imbalance of:

is finally immense enough for us to say enough, something’s off here, don’t know what...hold my fetal position. Regression.
And this imparity is a prominent academic and philosophical argument. Surely it’s clear to all that we live in an Androcentric, not Gynocentric, perception of what’s important. 1. Entropic Drift (most likely)
What we’re in now sustains. Unresolved Frozen Split continues reaping decay. No dramatic collapse, just slow legitimacy bleed until governance becomes purely performative. Jungian: our psyches remain stuck in permanent split mode...increased disinterest-exhaustion, no breakthroughs...a long depressive plateau...just tribes that can't even internally agree on what winning means...because the ones that can RULE-WIN.
2. Caesarian Charismatic Consolidation
What we’re in now sustains. One camp's Martyr-Hero figure achieves enough consolidated power to stop needing the opposing tribe's consent at all...bypasses institutions. Shadow projection completes its arc: the enemy is formally locked out of legitimacy, not just distrusted. Jungian: the group's shadow has a face and a throne.
3. Exogenous Shock Driven Re-Integration
An outside crisis big enough it can't be shadow-projected onto the other tribe (pandemic-scale, war, economic/climate collapse, alien invasion)...polar camps forced to work together forges unity. Jungian: the transcendent function gets externally imposed rather than psychically instilled...so it's fragile, not integrated, historically rare, short-lived; most likely, the old split resumes when the acute threat passes.

Cultivating Elevated Engagement below the Waterline
We’re witnessing many of our political leaders misconducting themselves, by even the most minimal standards of leadership, and without impunity. 167 countries are led entirely by men and make up roughly 90% of all top government leaders globally, while 28 countries are led by women.
And there are as many ways to solve it as the reasons responsible for it.
But continuing to endure-analyze our current socio-economic-culture-wide stalemate at only a 20th century consciousness level is like allowing the toddlers to run the kindergarten while teachers-parents just lament: ‘kids will be kids.’
Jungian Analysis basically points to the fact that, many of us as individuals...the ones most visible-vocal-tantrum-forward...in the context of this failed leadership era...have not yet integrated our Shadows, a mature step in the Process of Individuation as per Jung:
